Pompeii from Naples is a practical day trip by train, with Circumvesuviana routes serving different entrances to the Archaeological Park. The route you choose affects where you arrive, so match your station to the entrance and areas you plan to visit.
- Pompeii is 26 km from Naples.
- The Napoli–Sorrento Circumvesuviana line serves Pompei Villa dei Misteri, near Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra.
- The Napoli–Poggiomarino line serves Pompei Santuario, near Piazza Anfiteatro.
- Park opening and last-entry times vary by season.

Choose the Pompeii station and route
The best train route depends on which Pompeii entrance you want to use. The Archaeological Park can be reached by two Circumvesuviana lines, while the park also lists a Napoli–Salerno FS train option.
Circumvesuviana to Pompei Villa dei Misteri
Take the Napoli–Sorrento line to Pompei Villa dei Misteri for access to Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra. These are two of the park’s three entrances. Piazza Esedra is the park’s recommended entrance if you want access to the Antiquarium, which is included in the entrance ticket.
Circumvesuviana to Pompei Santuario
The Napoli–Poggiomarino line stops at Pompei Santuario, serving Piazza Anfiteatro. This entrance is also the starting point for visitors with mobility difficulties who want to follow the accessible “Pompeii for all” route. The route returns to Piazza Anfiteatro or, using the Antiquarium lift, to Piazza Esedra.
Napoli–Salerno FS train and Pompei Link
The park also lists a Napoli–Salerno FS train to Pompei station. A combined train-and-bus Pompei Link service connects that station to the Archaeological Park in about 15 minutes. Check the park’s directions and service information before choosing this option.
The park has three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra (Porta Marina Inferiore) and Piazza Anfiteatro. Before you set off, settle on the entrance that fits your route through the site rather than assuming every station brings you to the same gate.
How do you get from the hotel area to the departure station?

Caravaggio Hotel is in Naples’ historic centre, and Pompeii is 26 km from Naples. For your onward journey, first identify which station serves the train line you have chosen; the Circumvesuviana options use different routes and stop at different Pompeii stations.
Check how to connect through the city with this guide to Naples public transport and connections. The hotel’s location can also make it a useful base for planning the day trip; find Caravaggio Hotel here.

Tickets and archaeological park entry
Buy a ticket for the correct entry day and time slot, and plan to leave the site before exiting. Pompeii tickets are personal and non-transferable, and the park may ask to see identification matching the ticket.
The park sets a daily admission limit of 20,000, divided between 15,000 admissions in the first time slot and 5,000 in the second. It recommends buying tickets in advance.
Online ticket holders can go to the entrance turnstiles with the ticket PDF printed or displayed on a phone. Official ticket offices are inside the archaeological area at Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra.
One ticket rule matters when you plan your time: exiting the site and trying to re-enter on the same ticket is not permitted. The Antiquarium is included in the entrance ticket. The park also lists two themed itineraries, “Civic Pompeii” and “Daily Pompeii”; each takes about 1.5 hours and costs extra, with free admission for children under 10.

Planning time at the site
Plan your arrival around the park’s seasonal opening hours and last-entry deadline. From 15 October to 15 March, the park opens at 9:00, last entry is 15:30 and closing time is 17:00. From 16 March to 14 October, it opens at 9:00, last entry is 17:30 and closing time is 19:00.
Use the train route and entrance to shape your visit: Piazza Esedra suits access to the Antiquarium, while Piazza Anfiteatro is the starting point for the accessible “Pompeii for all” route. If you add a themed itinerary, allow about 1.5 hours for it. The park lists 25 December and 1 January as closure days unless otherwise announced.
Train timetables are published separately for the Napoli–Sorrento and Napoli–Poggiomarino lines, so check the official site before you go. Confirm current park hours, ticket requirements and train connections there as well.
